Introduction

AMRescue Photo Repair Advanced is a professional desktop application for Windows that recovers corrupted, damaged, or partially unreadable image files. Whether your photos were lost to a storage failure, interrupted file transfer, memory card error, or software corruption, AMRescue Photo Repair Advanced gives you a reliable path to recovery — without ever touching your original files.

The software combines two complementary repair engines: a Standard Repair mode that autonomously reconstructs image data from damaged files, and an Advanced Repair mode that uses a healthy reference photo from the same camera to rebuild corrupted file headers for JPEG images.

Key Capabilities

  • Repairs corrupted JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF, and RAW image files in a single workflow
  • Standard Repair automatically extracts and reconstructs valid image data from damaged files using latest scanning techniques
  • Advanced Repair rebuilds corrupted JPEG headers using a valid reference image from the same camera model
  • Thumbnail Recovery extracts embedded JPEG thumbnails when main image data is unrecoverable
  • Repair All, Repair Selected, or Advanced Repair — flexible workflow for any volume of files
  • Export as JPEG, PNG, BMP, or TIFF with configurable quality (1–100%)
  • Live preview of repaired images before saving — no guesswork
  • Batch Export with subfolders and multiple export type combinations
  • Non-destructive — your original files are never modified
  • Demo mode available — repair and preview for free, save with a license
Non-Destructive by Design

AMRescue Photo Repair Advanced only reads your source files. Repaired images are always written to a destination folder you choose — originals remain untouched.

6.2

Standard Repair — Repair All

Standard Repair is the recommended first step. The software scans each file's binary data, locates valid image segments using JPEG markers (SOI/EOI), extracts embedded thumbnails from EXIF blocks, and reconstructs a usable image. For HEIC and RAW files, it extracts the largest embedded JPEG preview.

1
Click "Repair All"

Click the Repair All button to process every file in the list, or go to Tools → Repair.

2
Monitor Progress

The progress bar and status label update in real time showing how many files have been processed out of total.

3
Review Results

A summary dialog shows the count of successfully repaired files. Each entry in the list is updated with a result indicator.

Repair Selected

Use Repair Selected when you only want to process specific files from your queue — for example, retrying a failed file or testing a subset before running the full batch.

1
Select Files

Click individual items in the Photos to Repair list. Use Ctrl+Click for multiple selections.

2
Click "Repair Selected"

Only the highlighted files will be processed.

Cancelling Mid-Repair

Click the Cancel button at any time to gracefully halt the repair operation after the current file completes. All files processed up to that point retain their results.

6.4

Advanced Repair

Advanced Repair is designed for JPEG and HEIC files with severely damaged header data. It performs Advance Repair engine according to a healthy reference photo taken by the same camera model.

Requirement: Same-Camera Reference Image

Advanced Repair requires a healthy, uncorrupted JPEG and HEIC photo taken by the same camera as the damaged file. The reference file is used only as a reference — it is not modified.

1
Select the Damaged File

Click the file in the Photos to Repair list that you want to repair with Advanced Repair.

2
Click "Advanced Repair"

Click the Advanced Repair button in the bottom bar.

3
Select a Reference Image

A file browser opens. Navigate to and select a healthy JPEG photo from the same camera. Click Open.

If successful, the repaired image appears in the Preview panel. If not, a prompt offers contact information for AMRescue's Professional Repair Service.

6.5

Preview Repaired Files

Save Repaired Files

Once satisfied with repair results, save the output files to a location of your choice. Requires a valid license.

1
Set Export Format & Quality

Use the Export as drop-down to select JPEG, PNG, BMP, or TIFF. Set the Quality spinner (1–100%; default 95%) for JPEG output.

2
Click "Save Repaired"

Click the Save Repaired button in the bottom bar.

3
Choose a Destination Folder

Browse to your output folder. We recommend a folder separate from your originals. Click OK to proceed.

4
Confirm Overwrite (if prompted)

If a file already exists at the destination, a dialog asks whether to overwrite it. You can choose Yes, No, or Cancel to stop the batch.

6.7

Save Thumbnails

When the main image data cannot be repaired, the software may still extract an embedded JPEG thumbnail from the file's EXIF block. Thumbnails are lower resolution but can recover valuable content. Requires a valid license.

Click Save Thumbnails in the bottom bar, choose a save destination, and the software exports thumbnails as individual JPEG files named OriginalName_thumbnail.jpg.

6.8

Batch Export

Batch Export saves all successfully processed files in one operation, with control over what to export and how to organise the output. Requires a valid license.

1
Complete Repair

Ensure all desired files have been repaired (Sections 6.2–6.4).

2
Click "Batch Export"

Click the Batch Export button in the bottom bar.

3
Configure Export Options

Choose what to export: Repaired Images Only, Thumbnails Only, or Both (Repaired + Thumbnails). Optionally enable subfolders to organise output into /Repaired and /Thumbnails directories.

4
Choose Destination & Export

Select your output folder, click OK, and the batch runs automatically. A summary confirms total files exported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try the software before buying?
Yes. Demo Mode is available without any activation. You can add photos, run repairs, and preview results at no cost. Saving repaired files requires a valid license, which you can purchase at www.amrescue.com.
Are my original files safe?
Absolutely. AMRescue Photo Repair Advanced is non-destructive. It only reads source files and writes repaired output to a destination folder you select. Your originals are never modified or deleted.
A file failed Standard Repair. What should I try next?
Try Advanced Repair (Section 6.4). It can recover JPEG files with damaged headers when you have a healthy reference photo from the same camera. If both methods fail, contact AMRescue support — professional manual repair services are available for severely damaged files.
Which RAW formats are supported?
The file browser accepts: CR2 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), ORF (Olympus), RW2 (Panasonic), DNG (Adobe/universal). All RAW repairs use embedded JPEG preview extraction for the widest compatibility.
Can I repair iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes. HEIC and HEIF files are fully supported. Standard Repair extracts the embedded JPEG preview from the HEIC container. Advanced Repair attempts a container-level header swap using a sample HEIC from the same device.
How do I move my license to a new computer?
Go to Activation → Deactivate on the current machine first, then run Online or Offline Activation on the new computer using the same key. If you are unable to deactivate, contact support@amrescue.com with your key and the Machine ID of the new computer.
My network blocks the activation server. What can I do?
Use Offline Activation (Section 4.2). Copy the Registration ID shown in the dialog, generate an activation code on any internet-connected device via www.amrescue.com/support.php, then paste it back into the Offline Activation dialog.
How often does the software check my license?
The software performs a local license validity check on startup. A background server check runs annually to verify the license has not been revoked. This is designed to work without interrupting your workflow.
What export formats and quality settings are available?
You can export repaired images as JPEG (quality 1–100%, default 95%), PNG (lossless), BMP (uncompressed), or TIFF (professional archival). The Export Format and Quality controls are in the bottom bar and apply to all save operations.
What if neither repair method recovers my photo?
Contact AMRescue support at support@amrescue.com. We offer a Professional Photo Repair Service for files that cannot be automatically recovered. Attach the file and describe how the corruption occurred for a faster assessment.
